Lions quarterback Jared Goff said rookie Jahmyr Gibbs "can do some special things with the ball in his hands."
It's notable that some teams reportedly had Gibbs ranked over Bijan Robinson during the NFL Draft and Lions proved that may have been the case with a high selection (12th-overall). Following his selection, the team traded DeAndre Swift, immediately elevating Gibbs to the starting lineup before the draft was complete. He'll still share snaps with David Montgomery but, similar to top rookie running back selection Bijan Robinson, his inclusion in the passing attack should greatly increase his fantasy production in PPR formats. Jahmyr Gibbs is found as DLF's RB7, a potentially lofty valuation for a rookie yet to take a regular-season snap.

Jahmyr Gibbs continues to stand out at OTAs and "just looks the part."
Gibbs was said to be a consideration even higher by the Lions during the 2023 NFL Draft while some teams reportedly had him graded above phenom Bijan Robinson. The Lions have hit the ground running with Gibbs and are splitting him out wide with the receivers, utilizing his strengths as a pass-catcher to complement his running ability. In all drills and routes, Gibbs has looked "fluid" according to the report. Listed as DLF's RB9, it's uncertain how the rushing snaps will be apportioned to start the season, but it's clear that Jahmyr Gibbs is operating as the clear RB1 at this juncture.

The Detroit Lions selected Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.
This was the draft's first real stunner as many expected Gibbs to be a late first round pick at best. Detroit lost Jamaal Williams to the Saints in the off-season and worked quickly to find his replacement. While this is a great pick in reality, it's a tough pill to swallow in dynasty leagues as the Lions backfield still includes D'Andre Swift. If dynasty owners ever needed a solid sign the Lions were committed to a running back by committee approach, they received it on Thursday night. Gibbs should still be a top three pick in conventional leagues and a top eight selection in superflex formats but his workload simply won't be as big as hoped, at least early in his career as he cedes carries to Swift and David Montgomery.

On the eve of the draft, and many dynasty rookie drafts, it's an interesting development. Robinson is still viewed as the top-overall running back but Gibbs' style has been compared to Alvin Kamara and he'll come at much less cost to that of Robinson. Running backs continue to be devalued due to committee, career-length and injury risk, and with Gibbs' draft value less than that of Robinson, it's fair to wonder if he could be seen as enough of a consolation prize that Robinson slides in the draft. It will all be sorted out on Thursday night when the 2023 NFL Draft gets underway. Jahmyr Gibbs is found as DLF's RB2 and R3 overall, behind both Robinson and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

There has been wild speculation indicating the Patriots are interested in a blue chip running back over the past week or so, with the focus shifting towards Gibbs. This would be a doomsday scenario in fantasy leagues as New England running back usage has been utterly impossible to predict in the Bill Belichick era. Gibbs remains our #2 prospect, but dynasty managers are clearly hoping this scenario doesn't play out.

According to BackCAST projections, Jahmyr Gibbs is the third best running back in the 2023 NFL draft class
The BackCAST model projects running backs based on successful statistics from the past in order to gauge future success. Gibbs is behind the obvious selection of Bijan Robinson but also DeWayne McBride. For detractors of BackCAST, here is where the projection system falls a bit flat. With NFL comps to both Alvin Kamara and DeMarco Murray, BackCAST places Gibbs as a fourth or fifth round grade. Should the metric accurately predict his comp, he's clearly a top talent. Due to workload and production, Gibbs' score is lowered, a fact dynasty coaches are likely to wave off with confidence. Drafted situation will be key for Jahmyr Gibbs, DLF's rookie RB2, and it's not out of the question his value slides on draft day if he's drafted into a poor situation.

Jahmyr Gibbs ran a 4.36 40-yard dash
Gibbs fell short of physical measurement expectations at 5'9"/199 lbs. but it shouldn't impact his draft stock much given his play profile. Popularly comped to Alvin Kamara, a better comp of Jamaal Charles was made and fits well. His vertical jump of 33.5" wasn't impressive but was enough to hold his value as this year's clear-cut rookie RB2. Gibbs should shine on third-down duty but has enough early-down potential to push for a greater role in the right situation. He's listed as DLF's RB2 and the R2 overall.

Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs had 76 rushing yards, two catches and 66 receiving yards in Alabama's Sugar Bowl win against Kansas State.
Gibbs finishes his lone season in Alabama with 926 rushing yards, 44 catches, 444 receiving yards, and ten total touchdowns. The numbers don't tell the whole story as Gibbs averaged an elite 6.1 yards per carry and had fewer than 200 touches on the year. He projects as an Alvin Kamara-like player at the next level and is clearly in the mix with Bijan Robinson to be the first running back taken in the upcoming NFL Draft and first overall player off the board in the dynasty rookie drafts, respectively. Simply put, he looks special. Gibbs comes in as our second ranked overall rookie.
