Dynasty Startup Draft Strategy Bonanza 2023

Ryan McDowell provides six different ways to approach a dynasty startup draft.

DeVonta Smith

Each month, I host multiple dynasty startup mock drafts in order to curate our ADP data. In order to best monitor these drafts, I participate in each mock. This month, I tried six different specific team-building strategies. Below, I’ll discuss each method and share the team that was born from that plan.

The six draft strategies I settled on were as follows:

  • Productive Struggle
  • Win Now
  • WR Heavy
  • All-22
  • Fake Punt
  • Best Player Available

PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE

I’ve written quite a bit about the strategy I coined as Productive Struggle. Find the first mentionΒ way back in 2014, with an updated look at the strategy as part of our 2021Β Dynasty Draft Guide. In case you missed those, the basis of the Productive Struggle is being willing to tank, or give up, the first season of dynasty league with the goal of building a powerhouse filled with young, valuable assets.

When applying the Productive Struggle strategy, there should be no concern about winning in year one, though that does occasionally happen. Also, no need to sweat exact position requirements. Often, Productive Struggle teams are built around the wide receiver position because that is the one with the best combination of high value and long career span. While youth is a focal point of this strategy, it’s not an exact rule. The real goal is to load up on players who are likely to gain value, with a goal of maximizing that projected value gain, likely through trading. Typically, this strategy would also involve moving up and down the draft board and acquiring future rookie picks, via draft pick trades, but that is not an option in our mock drafts.

I love this site and your writing, but it does feel like you are artificially reinforcing your consistent “anti-RB” bias by building the conversation around leagues that only require one RB. I play in more standard leagues where two RBs are required, and these strategies don’t seem to have a lot of success in those formats. When I look over the orphans every year (i.e. the teams owners are leaving for dead) they are almost exclusively heavy on WRs and devoid of RBs, and have finished in the 1.04-1.08 dead zone. People hoard RBs in these formats the same way superflex coaches hoard QBs, and unless you tank just right and get the 1.01 or 1.02 multiple years in a row, it’s going to be really tough to ever build up a RB corps that can contend. Just my observations, and maybe other sites are different. Thanks for the article!

I mostly agree but I think if your go very heavy on wr in whatever strategy, the key is to identify when you’re competing and build out rb as if you’re doing a zero rb team. My personal preference is to stockpile 3rds in advance if I think I can make a run, and use them to acquire guys in-seasin like devonta foreman, McKinnon, latavius, perhaps a mostert or Wilson type if that team isn’t competitive and wants to unload while they have value. There’s always some that can be had without mortgaging the future, and they give good short-term production.
