It seems like every season there is a surprise running back who shows up and blows away expectations. Undrafted free agents like Phillip Lindsay and James Robinson are a couple who immediately comes to mind. Then there are players like 2021 sixth-round rookie Elijah Mitchell, who finished with the production that so many were expecting from their competition- in this case, fellow rookie Trey Sermon.
While James Cook does not profile as a lead type of back and will most likely never sniff 200-plus carries, he has a skill set that can offer some value in dynasty leagues as well as being a weapon for the right NFL team.

The younger brother of Dalvin Cook did not accumulate gaudy numbers in terms of production at the college level. He totaled just 1,503 rushing yards spread across four seasons and only 230 total carries.
While some may consider dismissing the younger Cook based on the small production profile, that could easily be a mistake. There is a playmaker in there and it shows when the numbers are dissected a little further.
