I made a trade this off season, Dillon and 23 2nd for Gordon and 23 1st. I’m the Javonte owner. It wasn’t my favorite deal I’ve ever made but felt right locking up security for Javonte, and it made my 3rd 1st for 2023. Decent move? I was a big Dillon fanboy but couldn’t say not to a 23 1st.
I don’t know, guys. You gotta help me on this one. For me, this is without a doubt the one player I’d rank as “The Dynasty Rankings Most Over-Rated Player”. Where, in his profile, college or the pros, does it show he is lead-back, workhorse certified. As I mentioned in the comments section in another article, Williams shared the backfield with Michael Carter for three seasons at NC. The same Michael Carter, no disrespect intended, that after a fairly productive rookie season, saw his team draft the best RB in this year’s class. Williams NEVER out-produced Carter in college (and didn’t do so last year either (even on different teams, different situations, and just as bad of offensive team play?): Y/A – same; Y/R – edge Carter).
So, follow this. We are told to be excited about Williams’ potential and one thing that helps in that regard is his supposed draft capital, that the Broncos last year traded up 5 spots in the 2nd round to take Williams #35. OK, now to this year when the RB that is going to replace Carter in the Jets backfield, Breece Hall, had his team (the Jets) trade up two spots to draft him at #36. And rumors were out there that the Jets wanted to trade back into the bottom of the 1st round to take Hall. So…the guy (Carter) that Williams never was able to supplant in college just had his team trade up in the draft to select his replacement. Where does any of this scream Javonte Williams Dynasty Top 5? I don’t understand.
In addition, or additionally, whichever one might prefer, the Broncos went ahead and re-signed Williams’ backfield mate from 2021 in Melvin Gordon. While we can make an issue with the fact it took the Broncos awhile to decide to do that, maybe that delay was more due to wanting a lower price for Gordon, not so much that they didn’t think much of him. And, we have heard that Gordon is coming in ready to play and not cede anything to Williams.
So, Williams a good dynasty asset? Sure, I’ll give you that but Top 5? No way, in my book. I wish I had a ton of shares of Williams, which I don’t, so I could trade him to everyone who thinks he is Top 5 worthy and I’d ask for this player, that player, that other player, and throw in a 2023 1st, please. Now, I might be wrong and I will acknowledge if I am, but I think the dynasty stock of Javonte Williams equates to the 17th century ‘Tulip Bulb’ frenzy.
