Any insight or thoughts on how NIL could affect this 2023 draft class and the value of 2023 picks? I mean, the amount of money is getting crazy. Imagine if schools like Texas and OSU pay guys like Bijan and JSN $20 million(or whatever large amount) to STAY in school for another year? All of a sudden 2023 picks aren’t as good, and 2024 picks are the new “gold.” Could be a good topic for a DLF article for the Devy/NCAA guys. I mean this could start to be a major issue in Dynasty drafts in the future. I know a guy like Sam Howell isn’t valuable NOW, but he was once a projected 1st round pick in both the NFL and Super Flex Dynasty. He probably could have gotten around $5 million to stay at UNC for his Senior season(which is more than the $4 million he will get for his ENTIRE 4-year rookie deal as a 5th rounder.) I’m sure he wishes he would have stayed. I can see guys like that STAYING for their Senior years in the future, IF IF, they are not GUARANTEED/Promised by a team(kinda like NBA teams do) to be taken in the 1st round. If def is going to affect draft classes and predicting who will leave and how strong a class will be when trading future picks. Thanks
Worth noting it isn’t the schools giving them the NIL money, boosters sure, but Texas/OSU isn’t forking $20M over to a player to stay for their senior year
I understand it’s not the actual schools paying the $20 million or whatever, that’s not really the point. The point is that there are UNPROVEN TRUE FRESHMAN QBs signing with schools because they are getting $10 million in NIL, so there is no reason a more established Jr or Sr couldn’t get $10-$20 million as well to stay for ONE year, and this would affect dynasty draft classes. It might not happen this year, or even next, but mark my words, it will happen in the future, and will make dynasty draft picks from that class less valuable. And I think you are underestimating just how much $ a school like Texas BOOSTERS have and would pay a STUD like Bijan to stay if they thought it would help them win a National Championship. I feel like you’re acting like they’re getting money that wouldnt already be there by leaving for the NFL. If they turn pro, the caliber of player you are talking about, will they’ll be getting sponsorship/marketing opportunities AND a salary/signing bonus.
In the NFL there is a salary CAP, especially on rookie contracts, so they couldn’t make more. I feel you’re acting like boosters from schools like Texas, OSU, USC, ect. have less money than the NFL. A player like Bijan is more important to Texas and that state then he would be to the NFL. In the NFL, Bijan is just another starting RB, albiet, a very GOOD RB. But at Texas, Bijan could be a LEGEND. College Football fans/boosters are crazy/passionate, and now that they can just blatantly throw $ around with no repercussions, $20 million for a guy who could win multiple Heismans and National Championships would be well worth it to them. So yes, I do feel that money wouldn’t be there the same way it would be at Texas, OSU, or whatever high profile school. I guess time will tell, when we see guys starting to stay in school extra years and getting paid by the boosters. And again, I’m not really arguing the payment part, I could care less. As a Dynasty player, I’m just interested in how it affects the value of draft picks. And I’m not saying it’s going to happen with Bijan, per se, but it WILL happen eventually, and Dynasty owners are going to be mad they traded for a 2023(or whatever year) 1st rounder, they thought was “gold,” because now that stud player pulled out of that class, and that pick isn’t worth as much as they assumed.
No duh the NFL has a cap, think you’re totally missing the point that in the NFL you can collect salary/bonus AND marking/promotional activities outside of the NFL, it’s a double dip compared to just taking NIL. Not competing for a national title at Texas (how important) or competing for a super bowl seems like a tough choice.
