Lineup Advice, Strategy & Team Tracking – Week One

Our interactive lineup advice article is back! As always, I’m answering every question, every week! New this year are my weekly dynasty team tracking and strategy thoughts.

PLEASE READ FULL POST!

Okay DLF’ers, the 2022 NFL regular season is upon us!

We’ve added a new service! Every Sunday morning, you can join DLF’s new Discord server to ask those last minute lineup advice questions, or anything else which may be on your mind. In the very near future, we’ll cut off lineup advice on Saturday night and use this Discord channel to ensure your questions aren’t missed Sunday AM. This new channel is taking our community interaction to the next level. In fact, we’ll be having a little AMA session on Sept. 7 at 6:00 PM PST. Find out more here.

So happy to have all of you back with us for our 17th year! To all of you new DLF’ers with us for your first year, welcome! We can’t do what we do without each and every one of you. To my knowledge, no other site has an interactive lineup advice feature where EVERY one of the community’s questions are answered every week during the regular season. It’s just another way we show our commitment to our community.

This year I’m continuing a trend I started last year. Each week I’ll be summing up the combined performances of my dynasty teams and outlining some of the trends and strategic opportunities I’m seeing week to week. I’ve added additional dynasty leagues to my 2022 roster and it’s going to keep me busy once again.

2022 Team Tracking

2021 was a year that will be VERY hard for me to improve on. I was tracking and reporting on 10 of my dynasty leagues, ultimately sending 40% of them to championship games. In 2022, I’ve added two new start-up leagues and will be including an additional league (a 2021 orphan) into the reporting now that I’ve had one year of rebuilding. It’s a young team, but I did about everything I could to get it ready for 2022.

So, this year, I’ll be tracking 13 dynasty teams and we’ll see how I do.

Strategy and Trends

Along with tracking my team performance, I’m going to do my best to relay any strategic or player trends I’m seeing which may be able to be used for weekly advantage. Every week, luck plays a large role in whether we win or lose, so I’m looking for every opportunity to stack the deck in our favor. For 2022, I’ve taken a receiver heavy, running back light, approach to roster building. Over the past few years I’ve been tracking running back usage and dependability and I’m finally sold on receivers being the best coin of the realm. For superflex formats, I’m still all in on QB/QB with my first two selections, or, if don’t like second quarterback available, delaying my second one by one round, likely QB/WR/QB.

Betting Lines and Props

Something I’ll also be doing for fun, starting in week two, is adding my three favorite betting lines or prop bets for the given week. I don’t consider myself an avid sports bettor but I’ve sported a rather aggressive record in the past and I though we’d have some fun with it in 2022. These will most likely be bets with or against the spread and, perhaps, an over-and-under here or there, so play along and we’ll see how we do.

So, basically, I’m looking to expand my many years of simple lineup advice into a more fun, interactive and informational article in hopes of providing extra entertainment for our DLF members. I hope you enjoy another year of lineup advice as well as these new changes.

Lineup Advice Rules & Format

DLF continues to see amazing growth in our membership and each year I wonder how I’m going to keep up with all of your questions while also holding to a level of service and quality you’ve all come to expect from me. I’ve been VERY happy with my level of accuracy but, for that to occur, I need your help. Each question can take up to 10 minutes for me to research as I research up to a dozen different variables and trends. I do everything I can to get my answers correct. For that reason, I need you to read the following rules and guidelines to help me maintain efficiency:

  • Please don’t ask me to set your entire lineup
  • Put “TNF” as the top line for any question involving Thursday Night Football games
  • Include your scoring format  (PPR, Non-PPR, etc.)
  • Keep your questions as brief as possible – Story questions add a lot of time
  • I prioritize questions involving the earliest (Thursday, etc.) games first. If I skip over your question, don’t worry, I’ll be back to it.
  • It’s easy to miss responses to my responses in thread. When in doubt, always post a separate new question

Lastly, I work very hard to get my advice correct and I do not mail it in. When I’m wrong, I feel every incorrect answer so, go easy on me! That said, the DLF community has been absolutely fantastic to work with which is why I’m still doing this after so many years.

Have a great week! Have an even better season!

Let’s do this…

Welcome back, Jeff, thanks for doing this every year for us! You definitely helped me win a championship last year.

For week 1, which SF stack do you prefer: Lance/Aiyuk or Fields/Mooney? I’m worried about the 49er secondary, but Lance/Aiyuk might not be asked to do much. (10 team, SF, half-PPR)

Bonus: how do we feel about Burrow this early and against Pitt?

Thanks again- you kill it, man!

Thanks for doing this again Jeff. You are my one and only go to for weekly advice. I have two for you this week.
Both standard (non PPR) scoring.
Goedert vs Det or Schultz vs TB??
If Godwin plays, Godwin vs. Dal or Bobby Trees vs. NYG?
Thanks in advance.

In a half PPR league

Thanks Jeff.
I’m guessing my yahoo league is considered PPR (12 team, .25 PPR). For my 3rd WR slot who do I start:
DJ Chark vs PHI or
George Pickens vs CIN or
Tyler Lockett vs DEN (MNF).
Thanks in Advanced.

Jeff, this is my favorite part of the year and I love this post.

12 TM, PPR, 6pt QB TD

Question is who do I start at RB2?
CEH or Etienne? Taylor is RB1

Second questions (relates to 1st)
CEH/Etienne, Jeudy or Hockenson at Flex?

Thanks as always!

—12-man, 1 ppr who do you like for my WR4—Jeudy @ SEA or EMoore vs BAL?
—12-man, 1 ppr who do you like for my WR3 between Crowder, Olave, Hamler, Julio Jones, McKenzie, KJOsborn, and CWilson?
—12-man Superflex, 1 ppr—Trubisky @ CIN or Flacco vs BAL as my QB2?
THANKS!

Cool on Jeudy, that’s what I thought.
I’ll keep an eye on Godwin, JJ is TD-dependent, but might be a nice WR3/4. You like McKenzie over Crowder all year long?
I didn’t hear Wilson was starting. You still start Trubisky over Wilson?
THANKS!

TNF question…Allen Robinson.
non PPR Dynasty League, we use flex lineups for the five skill positions meaning we can start: 2RB/2WR/1TE or 1RB/3WR/1TE or 1RB/4WR
I’m uncertain which lineup combo I’m going to use because I have a lot of health/usage uncertainty at WR going into Week 1. Also, I’m not a fan of starting rookies early in the season. I’m not sure if 4WR is viable.
Out of Hollywood Brown, Godwin, Higgins, DJ Moore, Rondale Moore, Olave, Pickens, Allen Robinson and Theilan, I’m thinking I need AR Thursday night.
I have Nick Chubb and Mark Andrews available for 1RB/3WR/TE but to go with 2 RB, I’d have to make a call between Dillon and CEH. I don’t want that headache week 1.
So do I pull the trigger on AR Thurs or play the waiting game for this weekend to see if knees, shoulders and hammies are healed on my other WR’s?

What 4 WR’s would you start in week 1 in a .5 PPR league from the following?
Chase, Higgins, Diontae Johnson, Sutton, Marquise Brown, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Skyy Moore, Dotson, Juju, Claypool

Gordon Thomas

Sorry, one more weird question. I keep seeing suggestions to start EMoore over Pitts. I have the option to start TWO TEs on this team, and Kelce is my TE1. Pitts is my TE2. There’s no way in a standard 1 ppr that I would start EMoore over Pitts, right? The WRs I’m starting are Jefferson, Tyreek, KAllen, and Jeudy. Just confirming. THANKS!

Gordon Thomas
Reply to  Jeff Haverlack

Cool. And yes, I AM trying to move a WR for a RB or other options, but haven’t gotten any good offers. So, for now, EM is on the bench. But it’s a good problem to have. I’ll keep an eye on Wilson, obviously, as I own him in another league, but I expect EM to become a solid WR2. Concerns over the ATL QB maybe put EM over Pitts at some point, and Kelce can’t play forever. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Hi Jeff! Week one here we go and I’m glad we are together for the ride again!

0.5 PPR with a bonus at 100 yards and bonus for long TDs.

My opponent has Josh Allen at QB if that makes any difference.

Need two.
RB Devin Singletary at Rams
WR Gabriel Davis at Rams
WR Adam Thielen vs Packers

I’m leaning Davis and Thielen.

I enjoyed reading your comments so much, it prompted me to post my own question:
.5 ppr dynasty start 6 skill position players out of the following (I have more but these are the players I am considering):
RB: N. Harris, McCaffery, Chubb, Conner, Akers
WR: Jefferson, Chase, Lamb, Sutton, Bateman, Burks
TE Kittle
NOTE: Can only start up to 3 RBS and 5 WRs
My initial thought is RB: Harris, McCaffery & Chubb & WR Jefferson, Chase & Lamb

Chris Madden

Cheers to a new year!

.5PPR

TE: Hock or Kittle
RB: Etienne or AJ Dillon
FLEX: Bateman, DK, E. Moore, J. Jacobs, whoever doesn’t start above.

Jeff,
I appreciate your opinion, even when I don’t agree with you! Everyone has their own perspective.

Tyler Lockett, DeVante Parker, Alex Pierce, David Njoku, or rookie sensation Isaiah Likely.
Thanks!

I’ll start Lockett and hope Geno isn’t too much of a drag on his WR’s in week one.
Count me in on the Likely hype train. Bold Prediction…Likely leads all rookie TE’s in fantasy points this season. If he’s still on your waiver wire in your dynasty league, pick him up!

First time seeing this, so thank you very much in advance!

Full point PPR, 1QB 6pt td league…12 teams

For my Flex Week 1 would you go with Cordarelle Patterson, Claypool or Dobbins?

For Tight End would you go Ertz, Hunter Henry or Cole Kmet?

Not knowing peoples health and it being week 1 making it pretty tricky. Thanks again!

Hey Jeff! Just wrapped up a 12-team, .5, redraft keeper league. I drew the 10th pick. Kupp and Chase were both keepers this year which put players back some. I took Swift and then Chubb. How confident are you with them both this year? Also I had Cooks in the 6th or Pollard in the 8th. I took Pollard, took 4 receivers 3-6, (Higgins, D. Johnson, Thomas, Godwin) Lance in the 7th and Kmet in the 9th. Was thinking about packaging Chubb and a WR to trade for a top RB. Thoughts?

Absolutely! Your tha man! The truth is I haven’t ever had a lot of Nick Chubb on any of my teams throughout the years. My concern is, as always, Hunt stealing touches, (Williams with Swift too!) but on the flip side, Cleveland seems to have the strongest O-line in the league to start so I might just chill. The crazy thing is, I sent my boy a trade to get Kamara for Chubb and Thomas and he didn’t bite! My team is obviously full of risk/upside players so I figured “go BIG or go home!”
Thanks again for the advice! Good luck this year!

Hey Jeff, great post and thanks for your time. 1QB PPR start two RB’s – D. Montgomery, C. Edmonds, D. Pierce or JK Dobbins. I’m probably not starting Pierce for the first 2 or 3 weeks but thought I’d put him in the mix anyway. Thanks

Thanks for doing this again Jeff! Ready for another season! I’m on the bubble on who to start as my RB2. I have Damien Harris in that slot right now. I also have Mike Davis and I know JK Dobbins might not play. Even if he does he’ll be limited. So Mike Davis might receive a healthy dose of touches. What do you think?? Full PPR.

Standard PPR Flex: Goedert @DET or R. Penny vs DEN?
Currently leaning Goedert, as DEN will probably stack the box heavily and build an early lead. Could also choose Pollard vs TB which I actually find intriguing, after all that talk about him being used more in the slot and in 2 RB packages this season.
Thank you.

Hey Jeff – ppr format:

Which 3 do you start in week 1:
Diontae Johnson
CeeDee Lamb
Robert Woods
Courtland Sutton

Which QB for week 1:
Trey Lance
Derek Carr
Baker Mayfield

I know the qb question might be obvious, but I’m cautious on Lance and feel Mayfield is going to play vs the Browns like he is competing for the super bowl
