Week Nine

Another bad bye week on tap and by the time you read this the NFL trade deadline will have expired and, perhaps, we have some intriguing acquisitions. In fact, just as I'm typing this, I got an alert of Detroit shipping T.J. Hockenson to the Vikings - the rare intradivisional trade!

As I peruse the top scoring players list, I'm seeing the running backs coming back into focus. The usual suspects of course, Alvin Kamara, Derrick Henry, Christian McCaffrey, Travis Etienne, Derrick Pollard and of course D'Onta Foreman. Yeeeah, somewhat tongue in cheek. I think the point is clear here:  When surveying WR1 names and then looking at top scoring running backs, it's not often we have big rotation at the receiver position. That's not to say that all WR1's put up big games, but a down game doesn't threaten their role generally or suggest they will have another down game next week. But at the running back position, a big game, injury or change of circumstance week over week can have dramatic impact on touches, volume and even role. Again, this is why I'm prioritizing receivers over running backs.

Unless you have one of those leagues where the trade deadline is non-existent, something I'm firmly against in fantasy, chances are yours is approaching quickly. Again, remember my mantra:  Be the best or be the worst, don't be mediocre. It's very easy to get locked into years of mediocrity. Make the trades to put you over the top but if your team doesn't have it and is more than two or three years away in your estimation, trade away the Derrick Henry, Cooper Kupp and Travis Kelce sorts to the contenders for pick and/or player combinations.

Remember, bad things can happen to good teams. Keep your wits about you, avoid knee-jerk reactions and don't get  "cute" with your lineup decisions.

2022 Team Tracking

Just as a refresher, in 2021 I sent 40% of tracked dynasty teams to championship games. While I'd love to say it was all due to my management, luck still plays a huge role in our favorite hobby and I don't see a repeat of 2021. That doesn't mean I'm not gunning for 100%, however. In 2022 I added three new leagues to be tracked, bringing my total to 13.

I'm one of those coaches who is always looking at, not only the current week matchups, but future weeks as well to determine who I'm facing during tough bye weeks and in hopes of facing tougher competition on their bad bye weeks. This year is yielding disappointing results, not so much about my bye weeks but because those I'm facing aren't missing significant players in most cases. So I guess I'm going to have to truly earn my victories. When looking at my subpar week seven record (6-7), there just wasn't much I could do to change the results. I did cost myself a win with a poor star/sit decision but not significant enough to change my thinking. Sometimes it helps to look at your losses, get inside them and find there's just not much you could do. You just got beat. It may be because of injury, bye, coaching decision or any other number of reasons outside of your control. Looking forward to week eight, I was more concerned because I had Patrick Mahomes across many of my competitive teams and losing him is a big loss. I don't like having a poor week and then seeing Mahomes on bye to follow. Two bad weeks in a row finds me considering fantasy cricket instead. Is that a thing?

Anyway, funny thing happened on the way to week nine. My week performance was 11-2, bringing my overall record to 64-40. Now we're cooking with gas. It's not often I have good luck in Monday night games when needing points and I had two games riding on Donovan Peoples-Jones and Amari Cooper. In on league I needed about 9.5 from DPJ and in the other, I needed a combined 20 from him and Cooper. Thank you to both!

As I reach mid-season, I always look at my standings within the league and within my division to determine the strength of my teams, determine needs and survey potential trades. I'm always looking to be first in my division, or, second and within striking distance. Invariably there will always be a number of my teams fading due to lack of performance, injury or even bad build. Let's review how this Dirty Baker's Dozen of 13 teams has performed through eight weeks.

Of my 13 teams, 11 look to be playoff bound with the other two now playing for draft position. For those two teams, in both cases, there's not much way I'll be competitive with the performance of the overall build, injuries and too much work to be done. In fact, one of the these two teams is my longest running dynasty league that helped found DLF and I've spoken about it before. This league is the one where I don't prioritize winning as much as I do assembling my favorite players and draft picks, my two favorite parts of fantasy football. This is the team I watch and root for on Sundays so I have a team to focus on. And of course, drafting rookies is the most fun aspect to me in dynasty so I'll trade productive veterans for draft picks to maximize my fun. The downside is that this team will always struggle to be one of the top teams, but when it does get there, it should be a monster due to my build. I'm very excited about 2023 and beyond. Losing Javonte Williams, Cam Akers and dealing with the Najee Harris lack of production was just too much to overcome this year. But last week I traded away Harris in return for Chris Olave as you may recall. I also have what appears to be two top-five 2023 selections.

I'm very pleased to have 11-of-13 teams clearly in the hunt for the playoffs though, two of those 11 teams are punching above their weight due to injury. One of those teams has lost Breece Hall, Ja'Marr Chase, Treylon Burks, David Njoku and Rashod Bateman to injury, has Najee Harris as my lead back and just lost Irv Smith as well. In fact, looking at the week nine lineup options in this league, I can't field a starting roster. This was a team I took over as an orphan and I wasn't going to be tracking it here this year but thought it would make for good material and it had a chance. I'll have to pull a rabbit out of my hat to remain in the playoff hunt.

In my other non-playoff team, I'm 3-5 and the team really isn't even that good. I like the build for the future and looking for another couple of draft picks or young players as it's a young team.

Strategy

This is what I posted in week one:

Starting in 2021, I began a process of a mindful strategy shift, prioritizing young WR1 players as my core and mid-career veteran receivers as my production anchors with a corresponding RB-light approach as I like to call it. While I haven't updated my numbers-based research to prove out this strategy shift, it has been clear to me that the increased RBBC (running back by committee) usage continues to sap production from the position and when combined with injury potential, makes for a very high beta (risk) in your weekly lineup and long-term build. You just won't see WR1 players play 50% of a team's offensive snaps while rotating with the second player on the positional depth chart. It's the WR3s and WR4s where the greatest rotations take place.

Nothing changing in my positional views or prioritization. I'm still building through receivers, deemphasizing running backs, ensuring I have a top eight quarterback and doing my best to find the next tight end on the waiver wire. As a general rule I do NOT trade for tight ends. Too much turnover in the position and I'm always looking for the next Gronk, Kittle, Kelce, Andrews or Waller for free. It happens almost annually. Throw a lot of darts and hope one finds its mark.

This week especially, be sure to evaluate the NFL trades that have happened, find the players who are moving up from players that were moved ahead of them on the depth chart and take a stab. In many cases, the best think you can hope for on the bottom of your fantasy rosters is simply for a player to get a chance. If he produces, great! If not, cut  bait and move on.

Good luck this week.

Lineup Advice Rules & Format

DLF continues to see amazing growth in our membership and each year I wonder how I'm going to keep up with all of your questions while also holding to a level of service and quality you've all come to expect from me. I've been VERY happy with my level of accuracy but, for that to occur, I need your help. Each question can take up to 10 minutes for me to research as I research up to a dozen different variables and trends. I do everything I can to get my answers correct. For that reason, I need you to read the following rules and guidelines to help me maintain efficiency:

  • Please don't ask me to set your entire lineup
  • Put "TNF" as the top line for any question involving Thursday Night Football games
  • Please also make sure to tell me who YOU would be starting if not for my advice. It helps me to understand your gut feeling.
  • Include your scoring format  (PPR, Non-PPR, etc.)
  • Keep your questions as brief as possible - Story questions add a lot of time
  • I prioritize questions involving the earliest (Thursday, etc.) games first. If I skip over your question, don't worry, I'll be back to it.
  • It's easy to miss responses to my responses in thread. When in doubt, always post a separate new question

Lastly, I work very hard to get my advice correct and I do not mail it in. When I'm wrong, I feel every incorrect answer so, go easy on me! That said, the DLF community has been absolutely fantastic to work with which is why I'm still doing this after so many years.

Have a great week! Have an even better season!

I took over a stinker of an orphan this year, but after a bunch of trades I have (QB) Hurts, (RB) K. Herbert, AJ Dillon, (WR) Pittman, Aiyuk, Toney, Ridley as my building blocks, I have four ’23 1st (2 early, 2 late), two 2nd, two 3rd and an extra ’24 1st. It feels like I’m on the right path, just stick with it or try and trade away absolutely everyone? It’s also an IDP league but we don’t need to get into that. Thanks for all your content, much appreciated. My dynasty teams are all better because of DLF.

Hey there Jeff, 10 team, PPR, 1 QB. Do I go with Khalil Herbert or Curtis Samuel at my flex? I am really torn, but I am leaning Herbert based on his explosiveness and number of touches- I think Herbert may have a few more. What do you think?

Hey Jeff, me again. Do I go Tua or Burrow? I am leaning Tua based on the O-Line play of the Bengals, and without Ja’Marr Chase their offense was not impressive. Tua is has two great WR’s. Your thoughts.

Howdy Jeff, ready for another week! I’ve lost 2 in a row to sub-par teams, puzzling but that’s how it rolls! Standard Scoring

RB – start 2
I’m locked in with A Jones & Miles Sanders
I do have D’Onta F & D Swift as well. Any reason you see to make any changes?

WR – start 2
Locked in with J Jefferson at WR1
For my WR2, need to pick 1 from:
* Tee Higgins vs Car
* T McLaurin vs Min
I also have DJ Moore & Godwin but I think it’s between Higgins & McLaurin. Leaning McLaurin a bit with his recent play, but hard to sit Tee.

Let me know & thanks for all you do!

Quick update – I forgot to add a critical Q
At QB, Lamar @ NO or Tua @ Chi?
I didn’t bench Lamar last week, but Tua would have won it for me. Leaning Tua.

Thanks Jeff! That makes a lot of sense, especially at QB, will start Lamar. All set at RB so my only decision will be Higgins. All good 👍🏼

Hey Jeff,

Couple rebuilding questions for you, should I look to acquire Marquise Brown? I love his speed and the offense, my only reservation is that he will be 26 next season.

Same question but regarding Cam Akers?

What should I expect to give up for each?

TRADE QUESTION
12 team, .5, 1 qb, 3 wr, 2 rb, flex
Currently in first and looking to beef up my 3rd wr spot. I have Adams and Waddle but then a bunch of inconsistencies and injuries in R Moore, Pickens, Doubs, E Moore and Burks. Trying to pry away Amari Cooper and he wants Pacheco and Pickens in return..feels like Pacheco is about to pop and maybe a bad move but curious your opinion. Thanks for your hard work Jeff!

Hey Jeff,
Standard scoring, PPR, SF
Need 2 RBs
Jacobs was a stinker last but I’m sticking with him.
Mixon or Stevenson? Leaning Mixon again.
Need 4 WRs
Diggs, Godwin, McLaurin, A St.Brown, Waddle
Leaning Diggs, Terry, Amon, Jaylen. Godwin is concerning and Terry with Heinicke is getting a little scary again.
Thanks
Steve

Jeff,
I can start 3 RB’s.
Is there any one of the 4 WRs you might bench for Stevenson?
Diggs no. Waddle no. Amon Ra maybe. Godwin maybe.
I actually forgot to activate Diggs after the week 7 bye for week 8 and lost some points. Bothered me all week.
Thanks
Steve

HI Jeff!

I’m winning with smoke and mirrors and am looking for more magic.

0.5 PPR. TE score 1pt/7 yards and get a bonus at 70 total yards. WR are 1/10 and bonus at 100.

Need two.
Tyler Boyd vs Panthers
Thielen at Commanders
Taysom Hill vs Ravens

I’m leaning Boyd and Hill given the very favorable scoring for TE. Kelce is in my TE spot. ♥️

Thanks in advance!

well, I went against Hurts and Goedert last night and my opponent also has Ekeler. So this is what I’m thinking now….if Ekeler plays, I think I need the “magic” Hill potential to get the win on Monday night. However, if Ekeler popping up on the injury report actually means anything, I will go with Theilen. Also to note, TE Likely is available to pick up, and if I plan on playing Hill on MNF and Andrews is OUT, then I was thinking of pivoting last minute and switching to pick up and start Likey instead.

Hi Jeff. Great call on playing Foreman over Pittman last week thank you! I’m having to roll with Foreman at RB this week due to CMC and Saquon being on bye 😭. So flex spot comes down to Pittman or Doubs… 0.5 PPR. If Lazard is out I’m leaning Doubs against the Lions D. If not it’s a coin toss. Love Pittman but can’t trust him with Ehlinger especially with them going up against Bill B! Thanks in advance.

Standard Scoring
Start 3 WR’s, no flex
WR’s Tyreek, Amon Ra, Devonta Smith, DK, Doubs. Normally, I’m starting Tyreek, Amon Ra, DK.
‘But concerned if I skip Devonta tonight and then DK is out Sunday and I’m stuck starting Doubs.
Waiting to hear DK’s practice participation today…which way would you go?
Thanks!

12 team, ppr

I can’t believe I’m asking this question, but 2022 has been that kind of year….

I need to choose between

DeVonta Smith @ HOU
Palmer @ ATL

Normally Smith would be a no-brainer, but LAC doesn’t have many options in the passing game, so Palmer has to get a lot of volume, right?

I’m leaning toward Smith by the tiniest of margins.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

12 team half PPR. I need the best 5…must have at least 1 RB but no more than 2…

OK…here is another one. 10 team full PPR. Need 4 with at least 1 RB but not more than 2RBs. choices are…Drake, Kahlil Herbert, Deon Jackson (sleeper?), Mixon, Jakobi Meyers, Rondale Moore, Amon-Ra, or Darnell Mooney. I’m thinking Herbert, Mixon, Moore, Amon-Ra. But Deon Jackson intrigues me.

Hey Jeff!  My TE group is Waller, Moreau and Likely. Wondering who you’d start if Waller is declared a full go, or a snap count go, or if he’s out? I’m assuming we won’t know for sure about Andrews by the early Sunday game. If Andrews is declared out early enough though, I’d say Likely is a lock over Waller/Moreau. Thanks!

Mike Wendland

PPR:
DJM @CIN or Josh Palmer @ATL (or generally while both Keenan Allen & Mike Williams are out)
and in another league for the Flex:
Curtis Samuel vs MIN or Hockenson @WAS? I think generally Hock would be a better choice, but it’s his first game with his new team so he probably will only play limited snaps until he’s up to speed with the playbook, and Samuel is sure to get his usual handful of touches.
Thank you, and good luck!

Good evening. Little late.
Standard scoring. Need to drop one of these 3 RBs for a WR.
Henderson, Akers, or Kyren Williams
Your thoughts would be appreciated. Which has the most potential for the remainder of this year?
Which do you think in terms of next year and dynasty.
What order would you drop them? Being Rams RBs, you might want to drop them all. Haha.

Thanks

Hi Kemo,
A little late getting here after a 4 day tour of New Mexico (Carlsbad, White Sands, and the VLA). Wife needed to get out of town. Just didn’t have good Internet at my hotels.

A surprising 8-2 last week but 5 of those came in my “fun” leagues instead of the $$ leagues that seem to be more important. And yes, at the last minute I did put on my big boy panties, got aggressive and on Sunday morning traded my probable late 1st and Nico Collins for Davante. That went really, really well, getting 1 point from Adams and Carlson and losing by 10. Ouch! Playing Claypool who was penciled in earlier would have been a W. Don’t ya just love fantasy football!

Since you love young WR’s, would you trade away Pickens for Dameon Pierce on a team where you only have Jacobs, Mostert, CEH, and Wilson for RB’s? I have Kupp and Waddle for my WR’s but little depth behind them other than Pickens and Hollywood when he comes off IR. Team is in 2nd place.

On a 3rd place team, would you trade a probable late 1st for Aaron Jones when your current RB’s are Chubb (bye), Foreman, Akers, and Michel?

1) With Andrews now doubtful for MNF, would you play Likely over Tonyan and Hunter Henry based on the matchups?

Thx Kemo. Hope your father in law is improving.

Morning Jeff,

  1. Standard with no flex – can start two from DHenry, DCook and KWalker.
  2. ‘PPR- who do you see as a better stash- Toure or Velus
  3. can you see a world where ZWilson stinks it up again and gets benched for MWhite?
  4. just saw Cam will play for the Rams Sunday. Sounds like a 4 headed RBBC…and Rivers loses whatever value he may have had?

Thanks

Thanks Jeff. I can’t remember who called the Buff/GB game, maybe it was Herbstreet, but a comparison between something Toure did and DAdams was made. I’m going to stash him. Are you referring to a possible LT upside for Rivers? If so, I am certainly keeping him at least one more week. Love the speculative value in dynasty, thanks for sharing your thoughts. So sorry I didn’t specify Jeff, this is NOT dynasty. It’s a redraft with a 5 man bench. Armed with that knowledge, would that change your opinion? Looking ahead at week 11, DEN faces LV. Sutton (might still be their WR1?) might be good if we think Russ ever gets untracked?

Thx for the earlier response. The original RB offer I got was Jones and Zeke for my 1st and 2nd and I didn’t feel strong enough about Zeke for that. Your thoughts? I’m looking to counter my probable late 1st just for Jones and see what happens. Right now I would have to play Akers as my #2 RB today with Foreman as my #1 (Chubb out). Starting all three RB’s next week would make one of them my #1 flex.

1) PPR – Flex Hollins or Hardman?

2) Alec Pierce or Mooney?

3) Lazard (if active), Mooney, or MVS?

Good luck today Kemo.

Good advice. How about Swift or Rachaad White today? Swift is going to be “limited” but I was hoping for enough touches to make it work. My only other choices are Mattison or Henderson. And since the Jones trade hasn’t happened yet, I have to play Akers as my #2 elsewhere. Let’s see what happens.

Hey Jeff!
Not sure if you answer Monday Night questions but here goes!
I am up by 2 in my game and my opponent has only Tucker tonight. I have the option of playing Likely or Hill in my TE spot. Do I go for the floor with Likely or shoot for upside with Hill? I like Hill’s matchup better, but figuring Tucker gets 8 or so points Hill’s floor might sink me.
What do you think?
