Dynasty Twitter Observations: Will Diggs Fly?

Summer is heating up all over the place, as are the Tweets. We have OTA’s and depth chart shuffling already, and it’s not even July. Below are a few of the developments we’re Tweeting about this week.

Will Diggs Fly?

For most of his career, Stefon Diggs has been about as consistent as it gets. He’s extremely healthy, never playing less than 13 games in a season, and has averaged over 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns in his eight-year career. The move to Buffalo before the 2020 season only made him better after being paired up with quarterback Josh Allen. He is the main target in Buffalo. He’s been a top-10 fantasy receiver in each of his three seasons as a Bill and is one of dynasty football’s most valuable assets.

But are the good times coming to an end? There have been subtle but noticeable rumblings that Diggs isn’t happy with the current situation in Buffalo. Specifically, the play-calling on offense at the end of the season. It was a fair question to ask after Buffalo scored just 10 points in their playoff exit to the Bengals. The Bills are in a tricky spot and need to be careful how they handle it.

Dynasty Impact: Looking (way, way, way) ahead, Diggs would have no shortage of suitors should he and the Bills reach an impasse.

He’s been a WR1 for his actual NFL and dynasty teams for years and is coming off one of the best three-year stretches in recent memory. However, wherever he would (hypothetically) end up would be different than Buffalo and, therefore, an unknown entity. Looking around the league, how many teams not only have an elite quarterback but also a hole at the receiver position big enough to accommodate Diggs?

For all parties involved, Diggs should stay put. He can continue to thrive in Buffalo and, thanks to bringing up his concerns, could see even more attention. His dynasty managers would love it too. Buffalo has very little depth behind him and needs an alpha at receiver.

Love is Blind

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Jordan Love is chomping at the bit to show off after riding the bench for three years. Still, it takes guts to talk smack to your long-time rival. And for Love’s dynasty managers, it’s a good sign that Love won’t be backing down. But what will that translate to at the end of the 2023 season? No one expects Love to duplicate Aaron Rodgers’ stat line, but there will be enormous pressure to prove that the Packers made the right decision in drafting and keeping Love. In fairness, the team around him will be similar to the one Rodgers operated under, certainly the one last year. Led by young receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs and a better-than-average offensive line, Love can’t say he doesn’t have the supporting cast to be a QB1.

Dynasty Impact: With so small of a track record, Love might as well be a rookie heading into the 2023 season. And according to our DLF Trade Finder, he’s being valued as such in trades this month. There have been multiple trades that involve him (in package deals), with first or second-round rookie picks going back the other way.

No one would argue that Love would be viewed as the first or second quarterback off the board in Superflex rookie drafts. Yet, he’s ranked outside the top-25 in our own DLF rankings. The bottom line is he’s a huge question mark heading into the 2023 season. It’s a great sign that Green Bay felt strongly enough about Love’s talent that they moved on from a recent MVP winner. Yet we won’t know for sure until it’s the regular season and the games start counting. Love should be viewed as a hold until we see what we have.

Van Jefferson has never been a popular dynasty asset. The former second-round pick out of Florida has always lingered in the WR5/6 range, even after totaling over 800 receiving yards in his sophomore season. And while his follow-up season in 2022 was universally disappointing, there is reason to be hopeful about 2023.

For starters, the two studs that blocked Jefferson’s ascent to more production – Odell Beckham, Jr and Allen Robinson – are out of town. Cooper Kupp is still the lead dog, but the opportunity behind him is there for Jefferson. There are Allen Robinson’s 52 targets that have to go somewhere. There’s the bounce back when it comes to the Rams’ passing game after finishing 23rd in 2022 and surviving the injury to Matthew Stafford after finishing in the top 10 in pass attempts the year before. So with all signs pointing up, where do we value Jefferson?

Dynasty Impact: Between the decent track record of Jefferson, the draft capital, and the opportunity, it’s a little odd that he’s not being valued higher. Right now, his dynasty ADP is where it always has been, in the 70-90 range.

But for a player on a well-coached team with a good quarterback (when healthy), and a golden opportunity, it’s still odd to see him valued this low. Using the DLF Trade Analyzer, Jefferson is valued as a fourth-round rookie pick in this year’s draft. I don’t know that there is a single rookie I’d rather have than Jefferson. If he can be had that cheap, get him so he can be a contributor on the backend of your lineup.
