Week 14

For most leagues, we're at the end of the regular season with one game to go! Finish well, regardless of your place in the standings.

If you played vs. Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown, you played against two players finishing week 13 as top-five overall scorers. Sorry! Additionally, depending on your defensive scoring format, the Cleveland Browns finished as the eleventh best individual scorer last week. The top-12 overall scorers were a mix of quarterbacks and wide receivers primarily. Only Christian McCaffrey broke the top-12.

It's a brutal week for those missing players due to byes. Thankfully, aside from Aaron Rodgers and, maybe, Justin Fields, most of the quarterbacks on bye are mid or low tier players. But for those looking for help from other skill position players, Jonathan Taylor, Chris Olave, Alvin Kamara, Terry McLaurin, Michael Pittman and Christian Watson, the cupboard may seem rather empty and at a very critical time.

This is going to be a good week for me to go deep down the rabbit hole to pull up some intriguing waiver wire players who may have an opportunity for big production due to a combination of matchup and injury opportunity. I'll be doing that later today and Wednesday. If you're scraping the bottom of the barrel, check in with me in the comments. I already have my eye on a few players with upside potential depending on injury status above them on the depth chart.

If you find yourself out of the playoff hunt, this is a time to have some fun with the game in general, get back to the roots of this great hobby of ours. It should be fun to sidle up to the television for seven hours of commercial free football (if you get the Red Zone package). These last weeks is where I do some of my best work in research for 2023 as well. I start really going down the rabbit hole on topics such as prospective draft depth, 2023 free agents, trade targets, etc. Opportunities abound for the well informed.

I'm planning on having a series much like this lineup advice for interactive planning and research where I share things I'm finding as I dig through the dirt for opportunities. I'll be backing this article up with chats in our Discord channel as well so be sure you get involved with that!

Good luck this week, let's get to work.

Team Tracking

Week 13 was shaping up to be a very poor week until the second set of games and then my guys came on. There really wasn't many odd scoring anomalies or situations that flipped wins to losses or losses to wins, though one of my primary teams could not overcome a matchup vs. the Hurts/Brown stack. Just too tough to make up a 70 point hole from two players. I did have one team playing vs. the aforementioned Browns defensive unit as well and I lost big, but it wouldn't have made much difference.

As we enter week 14, the final regular season in nearly all of 13 of my tracked leagues, I'm relatively pleased with what I saw when I looked at the standings this morning. Of the 13 teams, I enter week 14 with only four out of the playoffs, and three of those were fully expected to be out of the running as they are orphan rebuilds or general rebuilds. The fourth team is a new league for 2022 and one I felt very good about but lost two of my three best running backs for the year due to injury and my receivers were ho-hum. Still thought this team would squeak into the playoffs but it was not to be.

Of the nine teams in the playoffs or, in the hunt, one is a perennially strong team which has never missed the playoffs. A superflex format and, while I withstood injuries over the first half of the season, I eventually succumbed, losing Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Darnell Mooney and missing Deshaun Watson. I traded Watson mid-season for what looks to be the 1.01 and 2.01 in 2023. I also lost Dak Prescott to begin the year though a backup of Cooper Rush helped keep me in games. I'm 9-4 and on the outside looking in for the playoffs believe it or not. While my record is good, it's a bit deceiving when you look at the all-play results. The loss of Stafford and Kupp had a production impact too hard to recover from. In all reality, it's best if I don't make the playoffs as I'll have the (projected) 1.01, 1.08 and 2.01 with a good looking core of players. Sometimes finishing poorly due to injury  is not a bad thing when draft picks are involved. I'm actually excited should I miss the playoffs. I'll update you next week as there are four teams fighting for that last playoff spot.

In leagues where we have multiple divisions, I'm at the top of most. In leagues with one large division, it's more of a mixed bag. As you may recall, a staggering 40% of my tracked teams last season made the championship game, a number I can't realistically expect to see again. That said, my stretch goal is for 46% (6) of my teams to reach the final game. I can't say I'm optimistic though, of the nine potential teams in the playoffs, there are seven which have a legitimate chance and two others which will take a higher degree of luck.

I finished this week 8-5, bringing my total record to 98-71. It's a good record, but not great. Ultimately, I've made two of my teams strategically poor which has cost me something near 10 wins. Flip those losses to wins and I have a record of 108-61, that's far more notable. But that's the game we play. Not all teams can be competitive every year.

Strategy

I want to touch on a subject which should be of interest to all you commissioners out there:  The Trade Deadline

There are a lot of thoughts about the trade deadline and where it should be placed within the fantasy season. It seems there are more and more leagues eliminating the  deadline altogether because it increases engagement and allows for teams to always be adjusting rosters and builds.

I'm firmly against trade deadlines occurring after week 10. Let me explain way.

The NFL imposes a trade deadline for a reason and that reason should apply to fantasy as well. A late, or no, trade deadline allows teams out of the playoff hunt to move assets which could impact the power balance of the league. Without it, teams would have more opportunities to rob Peter (future years) to pay Paul (current year) with less regard for forthcoming years. A trade deadline, strategically placed, forces teams to at least consider the opportunities of the current year while most teams are still in the playoff hunt. This plays out in fantasy as well but with other considerations.

Fantasy is not the NFL! Most play fantasy for their love of football but with the added bonus to win money, with high stakes leagues becoming increasingly popular. There's extra incentive for owners to sell-out of future assets to front load teams for competition now, foregoing future years. This is the same reason I highly recommend commissioners not allow trades of draft picks beyond the upcoming season. Too much opportunity for poor trades, front loading and eventual frustration, lack of competitiveness and eventual abandonment or lack of interest. I see leagues allowing trading of 2024 and 2025 draft assets and I cringe every time. Force your coaches to play in the near term to help keep your league balanced.

The last thing you want as a commissioner is for a substantial power shift in the final few weeks in what was an entire season of strategic jockeying for victories. We all play dynasty for the strategic element, the building and strategy during the off-season months which plays out during the upcoming season. There are few things more frustrating than seeing a poor performing team unload veteran assets late in the season, potentially elevating (rewarding) a team who was on the outside looking in. The dynasty game is waged primarily in the months of January through August, and then secondarily between regular season weeks one through eight or ten. I strongly discourage you from allowing an acute one-off power shift late in the season which may remove much of the strategic element.

Yes, trading is fun and uncompetitive teams should be allowed to better their rosters, but not at the expense of organic seasonal competition and the natural progression of off-season activities. Trading is a fantastic way to bolster team strength and league enthusiasm, but it's also a primary element for teams to become uncompetitive as well. Misfortune (injury) is part of fantasy just as it is in the NFL. Team owners must have depth and should not be allowed to unload assets to recover late in the season. I get questions all the time that go something like this:  My team is underperforming and I don't have any draft picks until 2025. What should I do to improve?

Trading activities should be limited to a time during the season when most all teams are still in the hunt for the playoffs and making the trade could impact those chances, either way. Moves allowed late in the season, when nothing is on the line, promotes activity which would not have occurred otherwise and unfairly shifts the balance of power at a time when build strategy and depth should be rewarded.

I'm off my soap box now.

Good luck in week 14!

Non- PPR
Starting:

Rb – jacobs
Wr – Jefferson
Wr- AJ brown

Would like your option ion on rb2 and flex

Options: pierce, j. Williams, Swift, Kirk

I usually start A. Jones and usually lean towards Williams. Swift seems to be picking up speed

Superflex League – need to either win or beat the league average point mark to make the playoffs. Only 1 QB to play, 2 of 4 RB’s I start on bye, leaving me needing to start 6 WRs. My Pierce IND, C. Watson GB on Bye. Need 1 starter – start Jefferson LA, Marshall CAR, or try for waiver Parker NE, Richie NY, or Landry NO as my 6th WR starter?

Hey Jeff, 10 team PPR, 1 QB league. I need one of these RB’s for my flex spot: Najee Harris vs Baltimore, D’Ontae Foreman @ Seattle (31st vs the run), or Jeff Wilson @ LA Chargers. I am leaning Najee because he is heating up. Who would you start?

TNF

Good luck this week, quite the set of injuries you’ve had to overcome this year with that team. 9-4 is pretty impressive thinking of all that.
I could use a hand with selecting an RB2 this week. My options are slim with the byes but here they are: 12 Team PPR. R. White v. SF, Mostert v. LAC, Knight v. Buf or K. Williams v. LV. I’ve also got Dobbins on IR but not sure I could stomach starting him if activated. Good news is I’ve already clinched and this is just for seeding. TIA and good luck this week!

Hey Jeff, thanks for all you do here, has really given me the edge over the past 3 years!

I will submit my lineup Q’s later this week but wanted to get your feedback on free agent move if possible. (If this is wrong place to ask, please forgive me man).

I have Lamar & planning to pick up Huntley with the one easy spot I have to cut.

I also have the chance to grab James Cook, but would need to drop D Foreman. Long term that’s a no brainer but for the short term in playoffs this year, who do you like more? Thank you!

Thanks Jeff, I think what’s driving this is over the past 3 years I have won my league once & finished 2nd twice. It’s always come down to making correct calls between A Jones, AJ Dillon, M Sanders. I have Swift, had Cam, but I seem to live or die by the GB running game & distribution in playoffs. Trying to create best options over the next 4 weeks. Do their week 15-17 matchups change your opinion at all or still leaning Foreman short term? No more Q’s on this topic…done 😂 thanks again.

J Cook: Mia, @Chi, @Cin
D Foreman: Pit, Det, @TB

Hi Kemo,

Decent week at 6-4 but losses for two possible playoff teams now barely hanging on in 4th place really hurt.

PPR
1) A question I never thought I’d be asking this week – Flex Cam Akers or Jameson? I’m starting Chubb and Foreman for RB’s along with Adams, Gabe Davis, and hopefully Waddle for WR’s. My only choices left for my two flex slots are Gallup, Akers, Mason, and Jameson. Everyone else is on their bye or IR. If waddle is out, I have to make gallup my 3rd WR which answers this questions for me unless I trade or find someone on waivers tonight (Wed). Your thoughts on if Cam is real or not.

2) Similar situation, different team. With Kamara/Jones on their byes and Walker pretty iffy, I may have to start Pierce and Jamaal as my RB’s with Adams, Lockett, and Hop for WR’s. I’ll need two flex players from Akers, McKenzie, Julio, and DemarcusR unless Walker suddenly gets healthy.

Thx.

It may not make any difference, but week 14 in these leagues is all play instead of head to head. Top six move ahead. One of these teams would have been 7th last week only 2 points out of 6th, while the other league’s team would have been 4th overall. Both teams lost a main player during the game.

0.5 PPR. 6 Pts Per Pass TD
1 Flex: Joe Mixon, Tony Pollard, Keenan Allen, Garrett Wilson (Pretty sure Mixon, but man it’s hard to sit the others)
1 TE: Dawson Knox, Hunter Henry, Chigoziem Okonkwo (Brutal. No Burks potentially, take a chance on Okonkwo?)
1 Flex: Jamaal Williams, DJ Moore, Singletary, Garrett Wilson (Thinking Williams here)
1 Superflex: Russ Wilson (puke) or any of the above not selected (Then Garrett Wilson here)
Thank you!

Hello Jeff…Our playoffs start this week and I am the last seed going into a playoff game against the a team that scored the most points. I have never scored in any given week as high as his average is. But never say die…I need the highest ceiling guys in this 10 team full PPR league playoff game. So far Mixon (Perine if Mixon doesn’t go) and ARSB are no brainers. But I need two more out of this group…
Diontae Johnson (what a disappointment)
Rondale Moore (if he plays)
Corey Davis (Jets will have to throw to keep up)
DPJ (I do not quite trust Watson yet)
Mike Williams (if he plays but even then may be too soon to expect much)
DJ Chark (could be a high scoring game but do I play him with ARSB?)
Bam Knight
Thanks Jeff.

Hi, Jeff:
As always, thank you for your advice. For this week, the outcome is about a coin flip (the other team is similarly strong). I have to pick a flex in a TE premium league out of the following: Zonovan Knight, George Pickens, Elijah Moore, or Isaiah Likely. I lean Knight, but Pickens probably has more upside if things work out even though I don’t like the match up for him this week. What do you think?
Many thanks!

10 Team ½ point PPR
Need two of four RBs:
S Barkley vs PHI, R White @ SFO, JK Dobbins @ PIT (assuming he plays) and D Foreman @ SEA. Barkley is the lock but White and Foreman have potential game script concerns.
Need three of five WRs:
C Lamb vs HOU, K Allen vs MIA, DJ Moore @ SEA, J Williams vs MIN and M Evans @ SFO. Thinking Allen and Lamb are the locks. The last spot is tough with Evans vs 49ers and Moore being hit or miss each week.
Thanks in advance

Hey Jeff…12 team half PPR league. If I win I am in the playoffs. I need to play 5 out of this group…with at least 1 RB but no more than 2 RBs. Which 5 should I go with?
Bam Knight
James Connor
Jamaal Williams (concerned with Swift emergence)
Mostert
Keenan Allen (seems like a definite to play)
Jordan Palmer (I am willing to play him along with Allen if that makes sense)
DJ Chark (high scoring game?)
Gabe Davis (not really doing much lately and Jets D is tough)
Pickens (not really doing much lately)
Terrace Marshall
Thanks as usual.

Hey Jeff,
TNF PPR
1) wondering whether to start Moreau tonight or gamble that Njoku plays vs Cincy this weekend? I really want to go with Njoku, but I’m having trouble reading the tea leaves on his practices. If I gamble and he’s out, my fallback is I Likely.

Stephen Atkinson

Thx for the Akers advice. Probably leaning that way so your vote helps. Pardon any typos – had my eyes dilated a couple of hrs ago and everything is blurry…

PPR
1) Need my #2 RB from Pierce, Wilson, Mostert, or even McKinnon/Drake. Pierce ran ran last week but wasn’t given a shot at the end zone from 3 yds out. The SF RB combo killed me with 4 pts total but should rebound vs LAC.

With Waddle limited yesterday, I’m in a tough place with one of my “hanging on for dear life” 4th placers. I may be forced to pencil in Hollins as my #3 WR in Waddle’s spot and stick Waddle in as a possible flex for Sunday. If I flex Waddle or not, which of my two RB’s that are left over from question #1 do I put in and in what preference since the SF game is at the same start time allowing me to wait for news on Waddle.

The other option is to put in waivers on Sherfield and put him in for Waddle as WR #3 and leave Hollins out of the picture completely. My bad for thinking about getting Sherfield last night on BB.

Thanks for all the help! I have to choose between Jeff Wilson, Mostert, and Aiyuk in half PPR, 10 team league. I need a high floor this week. Leaning Mostert because of last week’s usage and Purdy… but not sure about trusting him. Best chances?

Hey Jeff, the only starting QB on waivers in my dynasty Superflex is BPurdy. OK to drop Mariota for him? Purely a depth move for this year, Purdy shouldn’t play. The only thing that gives me pause is considering Mariota’s chances of landing a starting role next year?

Hi Kemo,
PPR
My only 1st place team (tied but barely ahead on points) really needs some solid advice here.

QB – Allen (NYJ) or Burrow (Cleve)?
RB – CMC, Stevenson
WR – Diggs, St.B, probably Aiyuk??

I need two flex from: Foreman, J. Wilson, James Cook, Jeudy, Mike W. (leaving out Demarcus and MVS since I think they are “out of contention” with this group).

Is Aiyuk my #3 WR? Williams coming back from his injury worries me. Jeudy (with Sutton out) is interesting, and all three RB’s should get decent touches. Need your best thoughts on the top two flex options there. Help!
Thx as always.

Having TE issues on a couple of teams and could use a bit of waiver advice.

PPR
1) I picked up Bryant last week who did nothing and now has Njoku probably returning. The only decent options left on waivers (I was outbid on Okonkwu on Wednesday) are his partner Hooper and Akins. Currently I have Juwan on his bye but with a foot issue and Likely. With Bryant as my only droppable player, which of those two TE’s give me my best shot at desperately needed points this week, or do I just run with Likely hoping he gets me his usual maybe 7 points and use the Bryant drop to add another offensive player to my roster?

2) I already have both Hooper and Bryant on this team and would look at dropping Bryant for Akins if you think his shot is better than Hooper’s with both Cook and Collins out for the Texans? I have Goedert hopefully coming off IR next week if I can win and stay in the last playoff slot.

Hey Jeff,
Standard scoring, PPR, SF
Do I trust Huntley as my 2nd QB? Starting Murray as #1.
Perine has looked good. Do I start Mixon and assume he resumes his normal work load?
If I start Mixon I’d have bench Stevenson, Godwin, or Huntley.
Do I start Waddle over any of these guys? I have too many option which is a good thing right.
I currently have Mixon and Waddle on the bench.
Thanks. Your insight is very helpful and I certainly appreciate it.

2) Need one D/ST- PHI vs nyg, SF vs tb, or KC vs den
3) PPR need one RB, one WR and one FLEX from- ETN (TLAW in or out?)vs TEN, RWhite vs SF, DForeman vs SEA, GWilson vs BUF and THiggins vs CLE
4) Superflex need two from- Kyler vs NE, Huntley vs PITT, MWhite vs BUF and DeShaun vs CIN

1) Murray(Boone is back), R.White(tough run D), Mostert. I currently have Murray starting.

PPR
1) Referring to an earlier question where you recommended my playing Akers on TNF and then flexing Pierce and McKenzie on Sunday (Allen is my probable QB). My other option, Walker is now listed as GTD for the late game. Your thoughts on my replacing McKenzie with Julio (also late) and subbing in Walker if he’s starting? Too risky?

2) Finally a kicker question – Stay with Folk (who either hits 4 FG or gets 1 or try to pick up Jason Myers off waivers early Sunday AM? In these leagues, a player dropped after week 11 is dead for the season I would have to stay with Myers if I make the playoffs. Adams getting only about 10 pts on Thurs nite is making me look for any points I can find with week 14 being all play.

Good morning Kemo,

Thx for the previous responses.

Before my lineup question – your thoughts on “all play” vs head to head especially in week 14? Our league does it to try to prevent tanking but not sure how much that helps.

PPR
1) Started Jacobs on TNF. Good so far. Team is in 4th tie but has lost 5 of 7 and needs to finish top 6 plus with a higher score than the other team.

I need my 2nd RB and two flex from Pierce, Wilson, Mostert, and probably McKinnon. Which one of these guys sits today?

Thx.

Unfortunately not….

I had a tough couple of choices there with Pierce and the SF RB’s. Saw online that Mahomes tossed him a TD but I have a silly sort of superstition in that other than checking before the late games for possible unexpected inactives, I try to not watch the results that much. On Monday night or Tues AM, I look at my various league standings and figure out whether I won or lost. I think this came from having 15-16 leagues a few years back (now only 10). I use the same pen for marking all of my lineups every week. I’m assuming there are a few of us “crazies” out there who don’t change their underwear during the playoffs or something even worse……. 🙂

One more –

2QB “fun” league –
Starting Burrow but lost Rodgers to his bye. I picked up Purdy off waivers as my #2 (who thought Mayfield??), but White became available this morning. I’m in 1st but a loss would drop me down a spot or two and change my playoff seeding. Your thoughts on Purdy vs White? Davis Mills is the only other alternative.

George Holmes

Hi Jeff 1pr ppr league. I’m in the same spot with my flex each week it seems like. Deciding between Juju, Juedy, and Jeff Wilson. Leaning Juedy I think.

For TE do you still like Kittle over Engram? Thinking of benching Kittle since it will be run heavy with Purdy at the helm.

Stephen Atkinson

Thx Kemo. Good luck today.

Not sure if the tanking issue was the main issue for all play but probably came about after a few seasons of owners keeping IR players active late in the season. A change to “potential total points” instead of actual scoring seemed to help there more.
Our “all play” originally started to allow each of the 12 teams to play each other once so no one had the advantage/disadvantage of playing a stronger or weaker team twice. No bye weeks for top seeds here. We play weeks 1/2 as all play and then week 14 followed by 3 weeks of total points playoffs.
