Week 16

Semi-finals in most leagues. Good luck to you!

Week 15 was kind of a tough week, at least for me. But when looking back at the lineup advice, there were a couple of lay-downs which were painful. Shout out to Zonovan Knight and D'Onta Foreman for making me play the fool. Unfortunately it happened in the playoffs, but that's been the case with running backs this year. The running back position has been a minefield all year long. Rhamondre Stevenson was a back I was universally sitting due to injury and the Belichick quotient, the fact that the old codger of a coach is always a mystery when it comes to his backfield rotation, especially where injury is concerned. AJ Dillon finally did something but, of course, how do you start him when he's done next to nothing all year?

If not for the Foreman, Knight and, to a lesser degree, Juwan Johnson, it was a good week of advice. But Foreman and Knight factored often leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

Looking forward, we've got some tough positional games/matchups to navigate.

JAX vs. NYJ - Tough for the trending Jaguars who are starting to look like a future offensive powerhouse. There's a lot of risk in this matchup for players such as Christian Kirk and Trevor Lawrence. Zay Jones may end up being the late-season fantasy MVP.

PHI vs DAL -  An issue for both sides, especially those relying on Hurts and Prescott, especially Prescott who doesn't possess Hurts' rushing ability.

BUF vs CHI - Fields sits at the helm of the NFL's worst passing attack but he's in the QB7 range overall in fantasy because he's rushed for 1,000 yards. That can't continue and BUF is just the defense to put an end to the trend. I fear for Fields' long term health.

Other than that, it looks like all systems go for most fantasy starters but I'll be going down the rabbit hole more on the matchups tomorrow.

Team Tracking

Well, this was .... a week. Almost historic for me, and not in a good way. I had six playoff games for those teams not getting a first-round bye, including two teams which were set to have a bye until week 14's MNF game. In the end I was forced to play in two more playoff games.

As Sunday came to a close, I was staring down the barrel of going 0-6. Looking at my matchups, there wasn't much I could have done. For my leagues which still use defensive teams, I had done a fair amount of research and ultimately went all in on the Packers against the Rams. Due to that matchup, I had four games which were still in play heading into MNF, two with the Packers defense and two needing a big game from Aaron Jones. So I took my 0-6 Sunday standing into Monday night!

How did I do, let's review:

Dynasty 4 (11-3)

Bye in week 15.

Dynasty 6 (9-5)

This team was due to get a bye but was edged out late in the previous week, meaning I had to play in 15, not something I was looking forward to given injuries and matchups. Down by 5.1 heading into the Packers game needing 6 from Packers' defense.  Was still down by one until a late Mayfield sack and interception, giving me a two-point victory. My previous defense playing would have resulted in a loss.

Dynasty 7 (8-6)

Similar to Dynasty 6 above, team was down 6 with only the Packers defense remaining. Same situation, same outcome and I was victorious by a mere 1.15 points. If I had started my previous defense, would have lost handily.

Dynasty 9 (9-5)

Lost my bye due to two points in week 14 which means I had to play in the first round. Given my team's issues, I was not optimistic and my assessment proved correct. This team was my biggest surprise this year after a dismal 2021 due to injuries. And I was hit again in 2022. I had all but written it off but somehow kept winning and almost secured the bye.

SUL9 (10-4)

Bye in week 15.

SUL10 (8-6)

Lost but little I could have done. A swap to Donovan Peoples-Jones from Bam Knight would have yielded a 3 point loss but it was not to be. Too bad too because I thought this team had a chance to repeat from its championship run in '22.

Safeleagues 189 (9-5)

I call this team my "snake bit" team for a reason. Exceptionally strong team top to bottom and, quite honestly, the strongest team in the league. But, once again, I'm out of the playoffs after a 2.9 point loss. Not much I could have done unless I started Trevor Lawrence over Dak Prescott. Losing Deebo Samuel to injury probably cost this team a chance to move on.

RTS SF1 (SF, 10-4)

First-year league and a strong looking team. But, in the end, lost by 7. Aaron Jones gave it a good go but needed another touchdown at least. This one stings a bit as I was going to start Peoples-Jones over Miles Sanders due to recent trend but took the guaranteed touches in a game I thought Sanders would carry a heavy load due to script. That swap would given me the narrow victory. My quarterback tandem of Justin Herbert and Daniel Jones were badly outscored by a score of 25.35 to 52.70 (Mahomes/Goff).

So what could have been a ridiculously bad 0-6 playoff run was a moderately bad 2-4. And quite frankly, I'm pretty fortunate that the Packers stepped up against the Rams to allow me to sneak past my opponents.  That leaves me with four teams still alive and in looking at the matchups, getting two through to the championship game would be fortunate. I have some tough teams as opponents this week.

So, if all four teams reach the playoffs, that will be a 30.76% championship game percentage, lower than last year's 40% and half of my unrealistic stretch goal of 60% in 2022. But the likelihood of sending all four to the big game is very low this year.

Strategy

Don't have much for you this week. In any of my remaining games, I'll be starting playable trends and favoring year-long performance over hot-trends. These plays will favor players like Donovan Peoples-Jones, who has been a consistent WR3 performer over hot players like Christian Watson who finally came back to earth. Additionally, I'm not looking to D'Onta Foreman again as the team seems to be favoring Hubbard's versatility a bit more, leaving Foreman as a touchdown dependent option on a poor team. Not a play I'm willing to make again with a trip to the championship on the line.

My biggest issue is with a quarterback like Dak Prescott, he just always seems to underperform while lower options like Trevor Lawrence and even Justin Fields continue to come on. I also have an issue with Miles Sanders, a back who has been consistently good but whose main role near the goal line is to help push Jalen Hurts into the end zone from behind on sneaks, which opponents have not been able to stop.

I'll be starting players like Diontae Johnson, a popular fade target in recent weeks who is finally starting to show up, probably due to Mitch Trubisky.

Looking forward to your questions this week. Good luck!

TNF – 12-team; PPR
Semifinals and the #1 seed, but injuries are starting to pay a toll on my roster.
I need 2 of the following, at least 1 of which must be a WR (already in my starting linueup are Ekeler, Walker III, J.Jefferson and DeVonta Smith):
Pollard vs PHL
J.Wilson vs GBP
Jeudy @ LAR
Zay Jones @ NYJ
Peoples-Jones vs NOS
I currently have Polard and Jeudy penciled into my lineup, but Wilson has a great matchup (assuming he’s healthy) and I’m a little scared by Jeudy’s QB situation and the fact that he could be shadowed by Ramsey if Sutton is out again. Tought to sit Jones, but the Jets are great against the pass and there’s no way he can keep up his torrid pace (right?!).
Thanks in advance!

Woof, thanks as always for the help, Jeff- I need it again after barely surviving week 15 (playing all of Aiyuk, White, Knight, Christian Watson, and Herbert). It was a nauseating first round.

Wondering now for week 16 between one of Mostert, White, and Knight. Got burned by the last two like I mentioned but worried about Jeff Wilson coming back. I like the Jets/Bucs matchups too. Sick of timeshares! Thoughts?

I’m also seriously considering playing Darnold over Herbert based on matchup and recent history. Other starter is Fields.

Last- the rare DST question- would you play one of the browns or saints over the bills given the snow storm and wind coming?

Thanks AGAIN! Best of luck to your teams still in it.

Thanks, Jeff! Can’t thank you enough for the quick help. I’ll go ahead and stick with Mostert, Fields, Herbert, and Bills.

One last one I kicked myself for forgetting to add just IF you have time before tonight- would you do Bam Knight or Chark? I’m playing Swift and St. Brown already so nervous about 3 lions.

Thanks again!

Hello Jeff…I have a strange trade question for you and I apologize in advance for the lengthy backstory.
I have a team under rebuild playing in the Consolation Bowl because I have the 2nd worst record in this Super Flex 25 man roster .5 PPR league. This Consolation Bowl has the #1 pick at stake. If I can win out against the other bottom dwellers I can actually get the #1 pick (Robinson?) or I could lose and have #3. I want to go for the first pick. My WRs of note are Gabe Davis, Nico Collins, Romeo Doubs, Hodgins, Jahon Dotson, Terrace Marshall and Garrett Wilson.
Wilson is a definite play. I am leaning towards Hodgins because of the Vikes. I really do not like anyone else due to their matchups…maybe Gabe Davis.
Again, I am sorry about the long story but background is necessary for my question…I am thinking of making a trade offer for Marquis Goodwin (taking Lockett’s place) who could have a very good day against the Chiefs. But, it would probably take Gabe Davis for me to get Goodwin since his owner is still in the thick of the overall championship. Davis drives me crazy with his Boom or Bust (mostly Bust lately) performances. Should I trade Gabe Davis for the short term use of Goodwin…could be the difference between picking 1st or 3rd next draft.

Thanks Jeff.

Thanks much Jeff for your perspective. I have decided to keep Davis. Not worth it for Goodwin when he might not do much better and he has no Dynasty appeal like Davis does. Thanks!

Start Zay Jones vs NYJ, Zonavan Knight vs JAC, or Deon Jackson vs LAC? Leaning Zay Jones but NYJ secondary scares me a little.

Bonus question, start MVS vs SEA or Demarcus Robinson vs ATL?

Mike Wendland

Well, one of my teams dropped out of the playoffs this week, in no small part due to the same circumstances as last year…the underperformance of Tyler Huntley, and my best IDP being a game-day inactive despite logging some limited practice sessions all week. Glad I didn’t take the last-minute desperation trade for Aaron Rodgers which was offered to me, as even with him I would still have lost and be in the same place, just with no early draft picks left in 2023.
However, the other team (1 of 3) is still alive, and with Olave now banged up, I’m trying to set up a lineup. Might even bench Olave even if he’s active, as he was already on a 49% snap count in the last game, so I don’t need him hobbling around in my semi-finals. I’ll need to fill 1 WR spot and 1 Flex spot out of the following options (PPR): Zonovan vs JAX, DJM vs DET, Josh Palmer @IND, and the dark horses I. Hodgins (@MIN), I. McKenzie (@CHI), A. Pierce (vs LAC).
After Knight’s dud last week, I’m currently leaning towards putting DJM at WR and Palmer in the Flex. If Olave is active after a whole week of full practice, I’d probably play him at WR and DJM in the Flex.
Thanks in advance and good luck to you too!

Half ppr, I’ve never not started Mixon but his production is getting sketchy. Is it time to move off of him. I could start Jerrick McKinnon or Terry McLaurin in his place. Jerrick feels like point chasing and I think after the bad play at the end of the game last week Terry is due to go off. What do you think? Am I right to move off Joe or should I stick with him for another week?

TNF Because of Wilson_Yikes!
Standard Scoring, PPR, SFX
My QB’s were Jackson and Murray now maybe Huntley, McCoy, and/or Wilson. Uhg!
Is Huntley really that bad? He looked serviceable last year. Can Wilson put up another week of decent fantasy points?
McCoy may not wake up and McSorley is probably not startable (not sure that’s even a word)
I have to start at least one QB. What do ya think? I doubt Jackson will play this week.
Assuming one QB do I go with Godwin, (Not so)Scary Terry, or Mixon.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Great New Year.
Thanks for all the advise.

Missed the semis in my 3rd league by 1 yard (Taylor Heinicke stopped at the 1!…It was especially frustrating because I clearly had built the better roster and performed better in the regular season).
Semis (0.5 PPR):

  • 1 Flex: Pollard, Mixon, Keenan, Garrett Wilson (I’m leaning Pollard, though Keenan has been good as of late)
  • 1 TE: Dawson Knox, Hayden Hurst (if healthy), Chig Okonkwo, Hunter Henry (Knox and hope for the best?)
  • 1 DST: Miami, Philly, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Detroit, Indy (I have Herbert, FYI) (This a tough one. Dance with the girl who brung you would be Philly, everyone is on the road except for Miami…do I go New Orleans because of the weather predicted for Cleveland??)

Semis (PPR):

  • 2 Flex: Mixon, Pacheco, Brian Robinson, Burks (Pacheco in what should be a good matchup and Mixon I guess)
  • 1 TE: Njoku, Kmet, Taysom, Juwan Johnson, Chig Okonkwo, Engram (Surprise me! I will say that I’m facing a very good team and might need a big week here).

Thank you!!

Well Jeff, thanks for all your input & knowledge once again. Knocked out in Rd1, first time in 4 years not in the finals! Over for me, I’m a 1 league purist, next year will be our 30th year believe it or not. Really appreciate your dedication to this “hobby”😂

The Tua vs Huntley decision was one path to victory, I think I “overthunk” that one but Miles Sanders may have just got his pink slip, he really did me in. Upon reflection, if I had started both GB backs, would be moving on. Hope you win it all in your remaining leagues, Happy Holidays!

Jeff, thanks for the help all year. Managed to get by in the first round despite starting Aiyuk over Waddle and having Mckinnon on my bench!

12 team PPR (no TEP).
Start Knox vs. Chi or Taysom Hill vs. Cle.
If Hurts is out would you consider benching AJB for London Aiyuk or Olave? I just don’t see the the same ceiling with any of those 3 but I’m not quite sure what to expect from Brown with Minshew and could see the Eagles just leaning on the run a little more. But I could be overthinking it…
Lastly. Play Swift over those 3 WRs as long as he’s not on the injury report?

  1. David Montgomery
  2. Michael Carter/Bam Knight

  5. D’Andre the Giant Swift
  6. Brandon Aiyuk

Also, would you pick up the Texans D to play over the Jets? My other two defenses are horrible, LOL.
I currently have Monty, Diontae and Slayton in. My opponent is favored by 22(!) points and I’ve already overachieved and won my division which is our entry fee so I’m playing with house money. Hey Jeff!
Had a bye last week — No. 1 seed — and now in the semifinals and boy am I nervous.
PPR 6-point TD pass.
Thinking of going
QB — Mahomes
RB — Ekeler and Aaron Jones
WR — Diggs, Higgins and Scary T
TE — Kelce
BUT, with the increase in AJ Dillon’s role in last couple of weeks and Tee Higgins being limited in practice on Tuesday (after the Week 5 and 14 debacles) I am a little nervous.
Do I bench one them and play Deon Jackson (with Jonathan Taylor shut down) or Jerick McKinnon who has 66.6 points in last two weeks? and bench either Jones, Higgins or even Scary T.
Or am I wildly overthinking this?
Thanks for all your advice this year, have a happy holiday!

NYJ or Cowboys DST? (Almost everyone else plays on Saturday)

Wasn’t sure if you caught my reply to your late mesg on last week’s lineups, but I did stick with Juwan Johnson which worked out fine. I’m hoping the 13 point diff between Allen and Burrow doesn’t come back to bite me, but the weather was a concern and Burrow was the safer play.

I did lose in one of my “fun” leagues against a much stronger team and my other team there at 8-6 is going up against the 13-1 leader so we’ll have to see how that goes. My other four “pro” teams finished 45-26 and are in three week total points leagues instead of “won and done”. It’s hard to complain about this season compared to last since 6 out of my 10 teams qualified for a playoff spot and two finished first for the regular season. Your help and advice as usual has been extremely valuable and one of the reasons I’ve been here at DLF for so long. Thx again.

Hey Jeff! Glad my Packers were able to help you out at least somewhat haha. Would have been more had Jones not lost a fumble (pretty rare that he does that!)
1). 1QB. Lamar vs ATL (if he plays) or Rodgers @ MIA. Lamar didn’t practice today (Wednesday) so looking more likely that he sits but curious just in case.
2). 1QB. Tua vs GB or Purdy vs WAS. Am I crazy to consider Purdy against the WAS defense? Tua’s matchup vs GB isn’t great either.
3). 0.5 PPR. Bam Knight vs JAX or Swift @ CAR. Mike White not playing for the Jets just kills everyone on that offense ugh.
4). SF 1pt PPR. Now the tricky one. Choose 2 of these 3: Brady @ ARI, Goff @ CAR, Rodgers @ MIA. Leaning Goff and Rodgers here but Brady seems to be picking it up a little of late so this is tough.

Hi Jeff- Definitely in need of some FLEX help here!
10-Team, 1-QB, .5 PPR.
I’m pretty torn between starting Amari Cooper and Leonard Fournette in my 2nd FLEX spot. I WAS leaning Cooper, but his lack of chemistry with Watson combined with the weather forecast this weekend and the fact that he’s nursing a hip injury are beginning to concern me (in addition to his previous history of torpedoing my playoff hopes in prior years). My other starters are all pretty strong, and I’m a pretty heavy favorite vs my opponent, so should I just take the safety of Fournette’s 8-12 pts and avoid all the risk with Cooper? Hi again Kemo,

You are going to be a very busy guru over the next couple of days….I wish you the best.

PPR

1) Need two WR’s from Hollywood (groin?), Hollins, Chris Moore, Atwell, and Cobb.

2) Starting Mostert. I could use another flex from Zack Moss, Mack, Jeff Wilson (inj?), or whichever WR is still available from question #1.

3) Starting Adams and Waddle. Need my WR #3 from Gabe Davis, Gallup, and even Jameson, Cobb, or Alec Pierce.

4) Same team as above, Need two flex from Foreman (yes, I saw your comment up top), Akers, or again from any of the “left over” available WR’s from question #3.

5) How confident are you starting Goedert over Hooper in his first week back and a new QB?

Thx again.

PPR
A couple of toughies for you here….

1) You answered a previous question earlier this morning, but still wanted to get your thoughts on my WR issue in Q1 since I’ve lost Lockett.

Agree with Hollins for a 2nd WR. Still need my #3. Normally would have just penciled in Hollywood but with a possible groin issue and a 3rd string QB, I don’t know how much faith I have there. My other options are Chris Moore (Cooks back but no Nico), Atwell (finally getting some looks) and Cobb. Moore plays Saturday but Hollywood and the rest are Sunday if I have to wait for the injury report.

2) My strongest team started off not so hot in playoff week one and needs two very good outings to have a chance to win. Two seasons ago I finished first and then died in the playoffs so I’m not looking for a repeat of that.

RB – Starting CMC and Stevenson
WR – Starting Diggs, StBrown, and ??? from your choice of Aiyuk, Jeudy, Mike W, and Demarcus.
Flex – Two from Foreman, Moss, Mack and James Cook or any leftover WR’s from above.

Jeff, thanks for all your help.

SF. Russ or Carr??

My thinking: Russ has sucked, but is playing in LA/good weather and Carr plays horribly in below 40 degree games. He will be playing in minus 10 Sat night. Gut tells me Russ but not sure. Ty again pal.

Back again… a couple of hopefully final questions.

Cowboys, Bucs, or Pats DST?
Bucs or Washington DST?

PPR
1) With Lockett out, I’m starting Adams and Hop (QB?) as my WR 1/2. Need a #3 from Lazard, Damarcus, McKenzie or Richie James (and yes I’m hunting waivers on Sunday AM but with so many games on Sat, the pickin’s for Sunday players will be limited).

2) Starting RB’s are Jones and Kamara. Penciled in Walker as my first flex but need a #2 from Akers or Jamaal Williams (or even Lazard from above).

3) My only TE’s are Hunter Henry and Likely. Henry seems to be on an every other game streak where he at least gets close to 10-15 pts or so and I’m not sure if you could call that a trend. Likely might get more usage with Duvernay out and Watkins just getting going. Stick with Hunter for week 16?
Thx Kemo.

Hi Jeff! Happy holidays!
I’m in three semifinals all with Hurts as my QB!
Two leagues I’m covered for back ups but one I’m stuck.
Who to start?
Watson or Huntley?

Thanks!

Thanks again Jeff, lol on my QB’s. Kyler going down and my own miscalculation of how much rust DeShaun would have has put me in a tough QB spot!
