With the end of each year comes an opportunity to look back and see what went right, what went wrong, and what was just truly unexpected. Much like Spotify Wrapped, I will look back on 2022 to see what transpired and which devy assets had their managers singing along to their favorite tunes.
The Group of 5 did not reach the heights it did in 2021. There was no Cincinnati, a team so dominant they were rewarded with a playoff spot despite resting outside the nation’s traditional power conferences. We did, however, get a stunning upset from Tulane in this year’s Cotton Bowl, a remarkable achievement for a down-and-out program that won only two games in 2021. It was the Green Wave – not Cincinnati or the more hyped Houston Cougars – who carried the day for the Group of 5 in 2022.
For the purposes of this exercise, Notre Dame is included despite their status as an independent. Ditto for BYU. While those schools tend to think of their programs in a different tier, they are here until they join a conference. For BYU, this will come next season when they become a member of the Big 12.
