Dynasty Rookie Report Card: Chris Olave and Sam Howell

We break down two rookies who performed well last weekend.

Each week throughout the season, I’ll cover at least two rookies in the Rookie Report Card and try to always include the biggest performers from that particular week. On top of reviewing my expectations for each player coming into the league and how well he’s lived up to those expectations at the NFL level to this point, I’ll grade the player in three categories. Those categories are performance to date, rookie season potential and long-term upside.

The series continues as we take a look at a pair of rookies that finished their first season's in the NFL with some fireworks, Chris Olave and Sam Howell.

Week 18 Stats: five receptions, 60 yards, one touchdown (12 targets)

Chris Olave was one of my favorite prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was incredible at Ohio State and rarely got enough praise for his work because he was consistently competing with the likes of Garrett Wilson and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, among others. Nevertheless, he was a touchdown scoring machine for the Buckeyes, scoring 32 touchdowns in his final three seasons in Columbus.

Hey Dan, I appreciate you and the article but I’d encourage you to perhaps rethink the statement ´Although he’s not a dual threat quarterback, Howell is elusive inside the pocket and willing to run’. Sam Howell had 800+ rushing yards and 11 rushing tds in his final season at NC… that is a sick rushing season for a rb let alone a qb…he is 100% a huge dual threat qb. Thanks for reading Joss. Howell was incredible at UNC and is absolutely a threat with his legs but I see a dual threat quarterback as a player that coaches call schemed runs for and I don’t see NFL coaches calling those types of plays for Howell consistently. I see him as a scrambler in the NFL who likes to look downfield while moving outside the pocket – which is an awesome trait to have.
Again, thanks for reading. I hope this explains my reasoning for that comment. Perhaps we just see Howell differently and that’s fine. If we get to see him as the Commanders’ starter next season, we’ll see who’s right. 🙂
